Coding in qualitative analysis is an analytic tool that involves labelling data in a way that identifies its content and/or its meaning within the context of the questions being asked. It allows data to be located, connected, sorted, sifted, and queried in the process of developing understanding of the information and implications in what participants or other sources are saying. Coding serves as just one of multiple tools used in qualitative research. Consider also linking and narrative strategies, summarising, memo-writing, visual techniques, etc.

You’ve met the challenge of designing a qualitative study, of gathering data, and of developing and using a coding system. Where to now? This seminar/workshop will employ practical exercises and example projects to illustrate and practise strategies to help you move beyond coding, and beyond simple ‘thematic analysis’. By thinking dimensionally, working comparatively, thinking relationally, working visually, and considering theory, you can use your coding to ask and answer questions, leading to a richer, deeper analysis. Using your coding in this way will support you in developing ‘thick’ description, and in building coherent arguments, models, theoretical propositions and/or practice applications worthy of the contributions made by your participants (and your effort thus far).
